Research Report

During the years of 1994 and 1995 Feed Service and its employees conducted an experiment to determine some of the benefits of Thermocal for dairy cows in Idaho. The experiment was conducted with special attention to transition periods, which has been proven to have the most impact on a cow's production for the entire lactation period. Anything that can be done to help a cow during the transition period will pay big dividends: Resulting in more milk, less mastitis and less hospital, days for the treated cows. A side-by-side test was conducted with 39 head of treated cows and 46 control cows The trial was conducted from June 1994 to February 1995. The treated cows were fed .25 pounds of Thermocal per head per day for 23 days prior to calving and for 31 days after calving. The results of the test were very significant. The cows receiving the Thermocal had Less hospital days, less mastitis and made a much smoother transition from the close up ration and produced 6.5 pounds more milk during the entire lactation period. The treated cows reached a positive energy balance sooner, which resulted in an increase in fertility rate.
